PAIRS originated in 2019 as an idea, when Dean Sarah Whiting launched an open competition inviting students to submit proposals for a new GSD student-led publication. The winning proposal, submitted by its founding editors Nicolas Delgado Alcega, Vladimir Gintoff and Kimberly Huggins, has since continued to evolve and create unexpected new connections through its successive editorial teams. The publication describes itself as “a journal of conversations.” Each issue pairs people with objects —interviewees with archival materials— producing dialogues that cut across architecture, landscape architecture and urban design and planning. Rather than following a set theme, it weaves together diverse threads and contemporary disciplinary concerns. Its conversations are deliberately “not comprehensive accounts but open-ended exchanges, eliciting often candid and provisional ideas in progress.”
